Westminster Mosaic Program *
For more than a decade, the Westminster Mosaic Program has added color, creativity, and community to our halls - and continues to exist with additional assistance from the Friends of Westminster (FOW) booster club. Programs as robust as Mosaic are not fully funded by LAUSD; they’re made possible by additional funding from our families. If you love seeing our kids’ art brighten the campus, please consider supporting through the booster club today.
How the Murals Come to Life
Design & Prep:
Westminster’s Artist in Residence, Tabitha Fronk, develops the artwork—often collaborating with muralist Yuriko Etue—then transfers designs to Wediboards and carves the shapes with her team.
Create in Community:
Upper grades (3rd–5th) work with palettes, select, arrange, and glue tiles.
Younger grades help break and sort tiles and enthusiastically join the grouting (a fan-favorite step—Tabitha’s, too!).
Installed to Inspire: Finished pieces are mounted in our hallways, becoming permanent, student-made landmarks of school pride.
Meet the Mosaic Team
Tabitha Fronk
Tabitha Fronk is artist-in-residence and lead project manager of this ongoing series of collaborative mosaic murals at Westminster. As a mosaic artist, licensed psychotherapist and board certified registered art therapist, she has worked primarily with children, teens and their families for the past thirty years.
Mosaic Collective Volunteers
This program thrives thanks to a phenomenal crew of weekly volunteers—Nan, Ellie, Leslie, and Jill—who bring expertise, heart, and humor to the studio.
Nan – Retired Westminster teacher and Tabitha’s first assistant; instrumental in launching the program.
“I love the mosaic project because it builds so many skills: creative thinking, the vocabulary of geometry and shape analysis, identifying colors, and working together. Most important for elementary school students is the experience of participating in a project that spans time. Patience, persistence, and sticking with a big goal are skills that help students mature for success in the learning and working worlds.”
Ellie – Retired Public Defender who discovered a love of mosaics in recent years.
“I stumbled into the world of mosaics in early 2020. When the world shut down shortly thereafter I dove in head first. I love the way mosaics let me create something new and interesting out of broken pieces. After I retired, my friend Bella (who was working in the Kinder Garden program) introduced me to Tabitha and I found a way to intertwine my love of working with kids and passion for mosaic work. Mosaic Thursdays are my favorite day of the week!”
Jill – Retired Set Decorator (film industry).
Leslie – Retired Assistant Director (film industry).
